Syllabus: Definition and objectives of Research-- Types of research, Various steps in Research process, Mathematical tools for analysis, Literature review, Surveying, synthesizing, Critical analysis, etc.
Introduction to Probability theory: Probability space, random variable, probability mass function for discrete rv, density and distribution function of random variable, examples of various discrete and continuous random variables (Bernoulli, Binomial, Geometric, Uniform, Gaussian, Exponential). Simple transformation of random variables, Expectation and variance of random variables, Joint distribution of multiple random variables, Statistical independence, Co-variance and correlation, Introduction to Law of large numbers and central limit theorem.
Statistical modelling analysis and inference, Time series analysis, Probability distributions, Fundamentals of statistical analysis and inference, Multivariate methods, Concepts of correlation and regression, Fundamentals of time series analysis and spectral analysis, error analysis, applications of spectral analysis, Tabular and graphical description of data.
Optimization theory and its applications to various engineering problems, Introduction to Monte Carlo technique

1) A Modern Introduction to Probability and Statistics, by F. M Dekking, C. Kraaikamp H.P. Lopuhaa ̈ L.E. Meester, Springer text publishers.
2) Probability and Mathematical Statistics, by Prasanna Sahoo, (This is relatively easy book, in particular we will use this book for statistics part)
